Two UCR stem cell faculty received new NIH grants this year.

Dr. Monica Carson, Professor and Chair of Biomedical Sciences and Director of the Center for Glial Neuronal Interactions recently received funding from NIH to pursue a collaborative project with the Burton-Jones laboratory at UCI. Dr. Carson's team will be characterizing iPSC derived microglia from individuals with and without Alzheimer's disease. Her lab expects to define how mutations in microglial expressed molecules lead to increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Dr. Prue Talbot, Professor of Cell Biology and Director of the Stem Cell Center, recently received two grants from NIH to pursue her work with pluripotent stem cells. Dr. Talbot's lab uses human embryonic stem cells to model prenatal development and will be determining how tobacco products affect early stages of embryogenesis. Her lab is also developing, in collaboration with engineering faculty, live cell imaging assays that can be applied to toxicological problems.
